Phelps Wins USA Swimming Athlete of the Year Honors
Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) was named USA Swimming Athlete of the Year and Mutual of Omaha Senior Vice President of Brand Management and Public Relations John Hildenbiddle received the prestigious USA Swimming Award. The USA Swimming Award recognizes exceptional contributions to the sport of swimming.
Phelps named USOC Athlete of the Month
The U.S. Olympic Committee announced USA Swimming’s Michael Phelps as its August Male Athlete of the Month for his accomplishments at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Sharing Swimming's Life Lessons
In a snapshot of time, Michael Phelps etched his name in the record books. With a lifetime of hard work behind him, it was just one-hundredth of a second that elevated him to legendary status. Awarded $1 million by Speedo for his accomplishments, it took a seemingly shorter amount of time for Phelps to reward others with his bonus money.

La Tourette breaks U.S. Open record
On the final day of competition at the 2008 U.S. Open, Chad La Tourette (Mission Viejo, Calif.) lowered both the U.S Open record and the meet record in the men’s 800m freestyle. Throughout the five-day meet, a total of 15 meet records were broken.
Thoman and McGregory close in on world records
On the fourth day of competition, Longhorn Aquatics teammates Nick Thoman (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Hayley McGregory (Houston, Texas) closed in on the world records in the 100m backstroke at the 2008 U.S Open. Both swimmers lowered the meet record in the event and earned their second gold medals of the competition.

U.S. Open psych sheet now available
The psych sheet for the 2008 U.S. Open is now posted. The U.S. Open will be held from July 29 – August 2 in Minneapolis, Minn., at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. The 2008 Speedo Junior National Championships will be held in the same venue the following week, from Aug., 4-8. <br>
USADA announces 'My Victory' campaign
USADA announced the launch of its “My Victory” campaign geared towards promoting the ideals of competing substance-free in athletics. Michael Phelps, Dara Torres and Natalie Coughlin have joined nine other athletes in this effort as athlete ambassadors of the program.
One More American Record Falls on Final Night of Trials
An American record fell Sunday evening on the final night of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming when Dara Torres (Los Angeles, Calif.) lowered her own mark in the 50m freestyle. Torres qualified in her second individual event with the win in front of a crowd of 7,723 at the Qwest Center Omaha with a time of 24.25.
One world, three American records fall on seventh night of Trials
One world and three American records were broken Saturday at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming. In addition, Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff picked up their fifth wins of the week in front of a crowd of 13,717 at the Qwest Center Omaha.
Phelps, Peirsol set world records on sixth night of Trials
One world record was broken and another tied Friday at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming. First, Aaron Peirsol of Longhorn Aquatics tied the world record in the men’s 200m back, turning in a time of 1:54.32. Then Michael Phelps of Club Wolverine broke his own world record in the men’s 200m IM in 1:54.80.

Spann pulls off shocker at Trials
In what might turn out to be the biggest upset of the meet, Scott Spann won the men’s 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:09.97 Thursday at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, defeating American record-holder and Longhorn Aquatics teammate Brendan Hansen in the process.
Two more wins, two American records for Hoff on fourth day of Trials
Katie Hoff of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club won two more events and set two American records Wednesday at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, finishing first in the women’s 200m free (1:55.88) and 200m IM (2:09.71). Club Wolverine’s Michael Phelps also brought home a win in the 200m butterfly with a U.S. Open record of 1:52.20.
Coughlin, Peirsol set world records on Day 3 of Trials
Two world records and a U.S. Open record fell Tuesday at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming. Natalie Coughlin of California Aquatics and Aaron Peirsol of Longhorn Aquatics treated the crowd of 12,559 at the Qwest Center Omaha to back-to-back world records in the women’s and men’s 100m back, turning in times of 58.97 and 52.89, respectively.<br>
Hoff wins second event on Day 2 of Trials
North Baltimore Aquatic Club’s Katie Hoff won her second event of the meet Monday at 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team in the women’s 400m freestyle. The University of Tennessee’s Christine Magnuson and Longhorn Aquatics’ Brendan Hansen also qualified for the Olympic Team, winning the women’s 100m butterfly and men’s 100m breaststroke, respectively.<br>

Michael Phelps of Club Wolverine and Katie Hoff of North Baltimore Aquatic Club set world records in the men’s and women’s 400m IM Sunday night at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming. Sutton qualifies for Olympics
Two-time National Champion Chloe Sutton won the 10K Olympic Open Water Test Event today in Beijing, qualifying for the Olympic 10K race later this summer and ensuring her spot on the U.S. Olympic Team roster. Her final time was 2:00:48.5.

Crippen, Fabian win 5K open water titles
Fran Crippen of Mission Viejo Nadadores (pictured left) won the men’s title today at the USA Swimming 5K Open Water National Championships in Fort Myers, Fla. His time was 55 minutes, 54.5 seconds. Thirteen-year-old Eva Fabian of Greenwood Memorial Swim Club took the women’s race, finishing in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 6.2 seconds.
Kyle Young: Optimistically Realistic
When it comes to swimming, Kyle Young is optimistically realistic. While his hopes are usually high about how he'll fare in the water, he doesn't go in believing more than he already knows. And whether or not it's a defense mechanism to keep from having his hopes dashed, Young is always on the up-and-up about what to expect.

Warkentin scores silver on final day of Open Water Worlds
Olympian Mark Warkentin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) concluded the 5th FINA Open Water World Championships with a silver medal in the men’s 25K open water race. Warkentin, who qualified for his first Olympics earlier in the championships, swam the race in 5:04:01.6. Team USA finished fourth with 48 points in the overall team standings. <br>
Sutton takes bronze at Open Water Worlds
Two-time National Champion Chloe Sutton collected Team USA’s first medal at the 5th FINA Open Water World Championships when she finished third in the 5K open water event in a time of 1:00:09.9. <br>

USA Swimming’s ultimate coaching education resource, “Foundations of Coaching,” is now available on DVD for the first time. The two-DVD set provides over four hours of education for coaches of all levels.
Warkentin qualifies for Olympics
Mark Warkentin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) qualified for his first Olympics at the age of 28 today at the 5th FINA Open Water World Championships in the 10K open water race. The National Champion earned his spot at the Olympics after finishing 7th in a time of 1:53:37.1.
Open Water World Championships kick off
The 5th FINA Open Water World Championships kicked off today with the 10K open water race in Seville, Spain. The event served as a qualifier for the 2008 Olympic Games, with the top 10 finishers automatically qualifying to compete at the Olympics. This year will mark the first year the 10K race is swum at the Olympics.
Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational tickets now on sale
Tickets are now on sale for the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational, the final meet of the 2007-08 Toyota Grand Prix Series. The meet is scheduled for June 5-8 at the Qwest Center Omaha.

Top U.S. open water swimmers to compete in Open Water Worlds
The nation's top open water swimmers will bid for a spot at the 2008 Olympic Games when they head to Seville, Spain for the 5th FINA Open Water World Championship Games. The event will be held May 3-8, 2008, in the Guadalquivir River and will feature races in the 5K, 10K, and 25K open water swim.
Study uncovers eye-opening statistics
A national, first-of-its kind survey found that approximately six out of 10 African-American children are unable to swim, nearly twice as many as their Caucasian counterparts. Similarly, 56% of Hispanic and Latino children are unable to swim.

Maccabi USA seeking Jewish swimmers
Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel, based in Philadelphia, PA, is seeking Jewish swimmers to represent the United States at the 18th World Maccabiah Games in Israel, July 13 – 23, 2009. There will be over 9,000 Jewish athletes from over 60 countries participating in the Games. Juniors and Open Athletes will be departing around July 2, 2009 for a mandatory Team USA Pre-Camp.<br>

Erik Vendt: Rediscovering His Joy for Swimming
Erik Vendt hit the wall – literally and figuratively – in his last race at the 2004 Olympics. After seeing the world through the windows of hotels, vans and swimming venues across the globe for many years, winning two silver medals at the Olympics among numerous honors, and setting an American record, he felt he'd done about as much as he could in the sport and there was still much he still wanted to do and see away from swimming.
Burckle named nation's top female collegiate swimmer
University of Florida senior and 2008 Olympic hopeful Caroline Burckle has been voted the 2008 Honda Sports Award as the nation’s top collegiate female swimmer. The honor was based on the results of national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program, now in its 32nd year. <br>

Cielo breaks 41-second barrier at NCAAs
One U.S. Open, two NCAA and two meet records were set Saturday on the final night of the 2008 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash. Auburn University’s Cesar Cielo became the first man to break 41 seconds in the 100-yard free when he set the U.S. Open, NCAA and meet record in that event with a time of 40.92. Two events later, the University of Georgia’s Gil Stovall set an NCAA and meet record in the 200y butterfly with a time of 1:41.33.<br>

Arizona wins NCAA Championship Title
The University of Arizona concluded the women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Columbus, Ohio in first place. Arizona totaled 484 points to win its 16th championship title. Auburn finished second with 348 points, followed by Stanford with 343 points.
Arizona breaks third American record
The University of Arizona continued its monopolization of the relays, breaking an American record and capturing two more NCAA relay titles at the 2008 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. With one day left, Arizona leads the meet by 117 points. <br>

Sunita Williams knows something about breaking records. Last year the Ohio-born/Massachusetts-reared astronaut set a new one for females by spending 195 days in space. As a flight engineer aboard the International Space Station, the STS-116 crewmember began her adventure in outer space Dec. 9, 2006. The 42-year-old, who spent her age-group swimming career as a member of Bernel’s Gators, says she’s discovered a lot of parallels between swimming and one of the most dangerous but exciting jobs on— or off— earth.<br>

Longhorn Aquatics takes fifth consecutive Club Excellence title
For the fifth consecutive year, Longhorn Aquatics, based in Austin, Texas, has earned the top spot in USA Swimming’s Club Excellence Program, scoring 51,568 points. Each year, the voluntary program recognizes and rewards up to 200 USA Swimming clubs for their excellence in athlete performance.

Hoff sets American record in 1650
Katie Hoff set the American record in the 1650-yard freestyle Sunday at the Maryland Swimming LSC Championships in Annapolis, turning in a time of 15:24.35. Hoff’s performance Sunday bettered the previous record of 15:29.15 – set by Kate Ziegler last December – by nearly five seconds.

Vendt sets U.S. Open record on final day
Two-time Olympian Erik Vendt (North Easton, Mass.) broke the U.S Open record in the men’s 1500m free Monday, on the final day of competition at The Missouri Grand Prix. Vendt swam under American-record pace for the majority of the 1500m race, however, he faded slightly in the last 200 meters, to finish in 14:47.59.<br>

Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Kaitlin Sandeno (Lake Forest, Calif.) earned the men’s and women’s high-point award for their overall performance at the meet, while the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club took home the meet’s overall team title. <br>
Joyce and Grevers win double gold at Toyota Southern California Grand Prix
Kara Lynn Joyce (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) took home two gold medals Sunday at the Toyota Southern California Grand Prix of Swimming. Joyce set a meet record with her swim in the 50y free and also took the top spot in the 200y free. Grevers won gold in the men’s 50y and 200y free, setting meet records in each event. In addition to Grevers and Joyce’s record-breaking performances, three other meet records fell on the meet’s second full day of competition.

Seven meet records were broken Saturday on the second day of competition at the Toyota Southern California Grand Prix of Swimming. Six-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) led the field with wins in the 100y free and the 500y free.
Vendt breaks American record at Toyota Southern California Grand Prix
Olympic silver medalist Erik Vendt (North Eaton, Mass.) broke the American record Friday on the first day of competition at the Toyota Southern California Grand Prix of Swimming. Vendt set the American record in the 1000y free with a time of 8:36.49, beating the previous American record by more than six seconds.

MAC: Success in School as Well as Pool
Mecklenburg Aquatic Club knows what it takes to produce a champion, both in the pool and in the classroom. Dara Torres: One for the Moms
Ignoring the aches and pains of her then-39-year-old body, Dara Torres listened when it told her she could still compete with swimmers half her age. The message came loud and clear to the four-time Olympian while she was swimming the fastest time among all age groups in the 50 freestyle at the Master's World Championships in 2006.
Stacked field to compete this weekend in Long Beach
A talented field of top American swimmers, including 23 members of the U.S. National Team, are expected to compete at the Toyota Southern California Grand Prix of Swimming, Jan. 18-21, in Long Beach, Calif. Hayley McGregory first splashed onto the scene as a member of the 2001-02 National Junior Team. After winning a national title in the 100m back last summer in Indianapolis, she’s back training with Longhorn Aquatics for 2008. Toyota, USA Swimming announce prize in Toyota Grand Prix Series
USA Swimming and Grand Prix Series title sponsor, Toyota, have teamed up to offer a $20,000 purse to the winner of the eight-stop 2007-08 Toyota Grand Prix Series. The next stop in the series is the Toyota Southern California Grand Prix, Jan. 18-21, in Long Beach, Calif. Swimmers will earn points for each medal won at a Grand Prix meet with the prize set to be awarded at the series finale in Omaha, Neb., June 8, 2008. <br>
5th Annual GTAC Disability Open announced
The fifth annual Disability Open hosted by Greater Toledo Aquatic Club will be held at Eastern Michigan University on April 26-27, 2008. <br>

Randall Bal: Swimming on His Own Terms
Randall Bal recognizes he's been somewhat unconventional when it comes to his training over the past couple of years. Junior Team wraps up Victorian Championships
The U.S. National Junior Team wrapped up the 2008 Victorian Championships Tuesday by winning 12 medals, two gold, six silver and four bronze. That brings the team’s total medal count for the meet to 38 overall – eight gold, 17 silver and 13 bronze.<br>
Junior Team collects eight more medals with one day to go
The National Junior Team continued to excel on the fourth day at the Victorian Championships in Melbourne, Australia with one gold, three silver and four bronze medals. With just one day to go, the hardware count stands at 27, including six gold, 11 silver and nine bronze.

The National Junior Team increased the medal count to 18 on the third day of the Victorian Championships in Melbourne, Australia with an additional six medals. The women’s 800 free relay led the team with a gold and silver. <br>

The U.S. National Junior Team won four medals – a gold, two silver and a bronze – Saturday on the second night of the 2008 Victorian Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Junior Team solid on first night in Melbourne
The U.S. National Junior Team won eight medals – three gold, four silver and a bronze – on the first night of competition Friday at the 2008 Victorian Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Leading the way for the Junior Team was Ashley Evans, who took first in the women’s 1500m free in 16:39.19.<br>

After Jeff Burrows’ swimmers won their dual meet against Kent Roosevelt High School Dec. 1, his team took him out to dinner. When the Golden Eagles got to the restaurant, more than 100 kids, parents and former swimmers took off their coats to reveal red t-shirts that read, “GlenOak swimming and diving, 500 wins and still counting.”<br>

Swim coach Kyle Wilson passes away at NBAC Invitational
Kyle Wilson, 36, who was in his 11th year as a USA Swimming coach, passed away suddenly on deck at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club Christmas Invitational on Dec. 9. Despite efforts from medical personnel, Kyle could not be resuscitated. Although he was in peak physical condition, Kyle was cited to have died from a “cardiac event.”<br>

American records fall over the weekend
It seems nothing can stand in the way of teenage sensations Katie Hoff and Kate Ziegler setting American records nearly every time they get in the pool. Olympian Hoff set four American records at the 34th annual North Baltimore Aquatic Club Christmas Invitational, while world-record holder Ziegler erased her own 1650y free American record at the Tom Dolan Invitational.
Gaines transitions to new role with USA Swimming Foundation
The USA Swimming Foundation, today announced that Chief Fundraising and Development Officer Rowdy Gaines will depart his full-time position with the organization in order to accept an opportunity within the private sector with The Limu Company. Gaines will continue to support the Foundation and be involved with its mission.
Olympic Trials event directors announced
Harold Cliff, chief operating officer for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Swimming, announced today that Mary Losee and Arlene McDonald will serve as the co-event directors for the event, scheduled for June 29 – July 6, 2008.
